BIOMEDICAL EQUIPMENT NETWORKING SPECIALIST

This position serves as a senior-level Biomedical Equipment Support (BME) Specialist for the Biomcd Section located within Engineering under the Facilities Management umbrella.
This BME Specialist will handle network connectivity for highly complex medical systems, which include, but are not limited to picture archiving and communications systems (PACS) cardiology management systems (MUSE), imaging, laboratory equipment, and other patient information systems required for medical patient care at this VA Health Care System.
The position's duties revolve around the active application of clinical engineering principles to complex computer based systems that require research, design, development, interface, implementation, and maintenance.
o The incumbent's primary duties will revolve around network connectivity for all medical devices at this medical center, which specifically includes the very complex PACS and MUSE systems.
Secondary responsibilities will include, but not be limited to maintenance of other highly complex medical equipment, such as the CT scanner, MRI, special procedure rooms, cardiac catheterization lab, radiology/fluoroscopy rooms, scintillation cameras, general radiographic rooms, mobile x-ray and c-arms, diagnostic ultrasound, dialysis machines, anesthesia machines, medication administration, ophthalmic systems, and/or physiological monitoring systems.
The incumbent is responsible for the technical support of hospital and VISN-wide networked medical systems and databases.
This support includes pre-purchase evaluation, technical training, utilization, installation, maintenance, repair, modification, life expectancy, and replacement.
These systems include state of the art, highly sophisticated biomedical instrumentation, digital imaging systems, and state of the art PACS.
He/she serves as consultant to the clinical and administrative staff on technical principles and clinical applications.
Through this support the incumbent's position is critical to the delivery of high quality patient care.
The incumbent is responsible for all medical device computer/network systems, which integrate highly sophisticated medical instrumentation systems using different communication protocols.
The incumbent must be a technical expert on computer networking, including the different standards, protocols, and topologies, He/she is responsible for ensuring that installation, support and maintenance is performed on what is typically a proprietary network, which includes network operating systems and hardware.
The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs to all major components of medical database and PACS systems, including Computed Radiography (CR), an Intermediate Storage Unit (ISU), Archival Jukebox, Fiber Optic Hubs, Modality Gateways, Interface Units, and Network Servers is accomplished in a timely manner.
The incumbent is familiar with the DICOM interface requirements for the modalities integrated in the PACS, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Digital Radiography and Fluoroscopy, Nuclear Imaging systems, and Ultrasound Imaging.
He/she must be a technical expert on Digital Enhancement techniques used by the previous modalities to maintain quality assurance.
In addition to the above specific responsibilities, the incumbent is expected to apply extensive theoretical and practical knowledge in electronics, mechanics, chemistry, and biology to perform duties of broad scope and complexity.
He/she typically provides comprehensive technical support for highly sophisticated biomedical instrumentation systems.
These systems are assembled from numerous constituent units or subsystems, which are themselves devices with an advanced degree of complexity.
The lack of specific maintenance guidelines and adequate documentation often occurs.
In such cases the incumbent exercises resourcefulness for particular applications or makes significant adaptations of available guidelines to complete his/her assignment.
In order to reduce breakdowns, eliminate hazards, enhance accuracy, and improve reliability the incumbent must have the ability to recommend, develop, and implement:
redesign, reconfiguration, or modification of operating procedures.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
